In the 1800's clothing worn by drovers was derived from the attire of Spanish vaqueros (cowboys) who had worked on the ranchos of California. Leather pants called chaps protected their legs from brush and thorns as well as the horns of the cattle.

There are a number of chap styles:

Batwing Chaps - had wide flaps

Shotgun Chaps - straight leg style

Woolies Chaps - thick and warm

Half Chaps - short to cover from the knee down (Leather Leg type)

Today leather chaps and half chaps are used in many varied ways. The traditional use by cowboys and cowgirls is still going strong but there are some new and surprising uses as well.

We are all familiar with the motorcycle rider in his or her leather attire. There are some major improvements in these bulky and often awkward pieces of apparel. Considering the traditional motorcycle chap covers the entire leg up to the belt area, it simply doesn't make sense from a protection standpoint. The area of the leg from the knee downward is facing forward and breaking into the wind and this is the area most vulnerable to bugs, gravel and debris.

The area above the knee to the hip is already in the lee of the wind and protected. Why wear a full set of chaps that cover your entire leg even your ass ? Assless chaps make a lot of sense and thighless or half chaps make even more sense. That's exactly what the motorcycle half chaps alternative, leather legs accomplishes. They are sleek, comfortable and easily and quickly removed. Half chaps are much more comfortable and easy to pack for travel.

Hunter, farmers and ranchers also find that leather half chaps alternative make more sense for everyday protection from briars, brush, snakes and basic protection for the shin and ankles from all sorts of obstacles.

Anyone using a chain saw has a higher degree of protection while using leather half chaps. Professionals and homeowners alike are using these comfortable chaps alternative while working outside.
